Rover and Cal

Cal, myself and Rover in front of the entrance
to Cirque du Soleil's "Love" at the Mirage in Las Vegas.

This past weekend brought our friends Rover and Cal from California and some of their friends to Las Vegas. They were in town to see the new Bette Middler show at Caesars Palace and Cirque du Soleil’s “Love” at the Mirage. Rover’s mother and sister, whom he hasn’t seen in three years, also flew in to join this eclectic group of fun and easy-spirited people.

Rover and Cal stayed at our home overnight, while the rest of the gang stayed at various hotels near the Las Vegas Strip. Most of the days were spent at some of the resorts along Strip. Not so much for gambling but for checking out some of the sights and spending a fun time together over good food and a few drinks. George and I joined them all on some occasion and together we all played tourists. Lots of fun was to be had by everyone.

We love Rover and Cal. They’re both the most fun guys to be with. Both are highly creative and very hands-on in everything they do. There’s never a dull moment in their lives, as they share the experiences of being an actor, writer, director, remodeling and restoring old buildings and cars, and event organizers. Oh, and did we mention theme park designer for Disneyland and Walt Disney World? If you’ve been on rides dealing with, let’s say, Indiana Jones, Roger Rabbit and the Muppets, you can thank Rover in part for that.

And despite their busy lives, they are the happiest, yet most grounded people we know. Rover and Cal are intelligent, intellectual and passionate and we had many profound conversations and discussions with them. And in the spur of the moment they both can kid around and just be plain silly and totally crack you up. The world needs more of them and it would be so much better for it.

George and I are looking forward to seeing them again real soon.

Just because...

Here are some more slivers from our part of the world. For no particular reason...just because. To share with friends and family. In any case...enjoy.

Here's George waiting patiently in front of the Venetian Hotel & Casino's Porte Cochère until I'm finally done taking pictures of every little doohickey.

This is my humble self, enjoying the evening sun in Mary's backyard.

The following three pictures show Pueblo Park, located nearby where we live. We can be found there almost daily, for leisurely walks or a jog through the whole park.

Outside the Guggenheim Hermitage Museum at the Venetian Hotel & Casino. And they say there's no culture in Las Vegas. It's not the Louvre in Paris, but still. Hey, at least they're trying.
More from our backyard. Here are our bougainvilleas in full bloom.
Noch mehr von unserem Garten. Hier blüht unser Bougainvilleas Strauch in voller Pracht. Weiß jemand was Bougainvillea auf Deutsch heißt?
Our patio with the typical wind chimes and garden lanterns above the table, where we sometimes eat outside...weather permitting, that is. When it's not hot as hell.

Backyard

For a change, here are some photos of our backyard plants and the ones we have indoors. We have a fairly small backyard, which is fine by us. We got rid of the grassy area a few years ago and replaced it with xeroscaping, as it’s naturally preserving the geographic textures and colors of the local region. Living in the desert, it only makes sense. It also conserves water and we don’t have to mow the lawn anymore. Less yard work to worry about. Besides, the little gardening we do is plenty enough and keeps us busy regardless.

This spring has been relatively mild and was unusually prolonged, which George and I enjoyed immensely. We took advantage of the pleasant spring-time weather and planted new flowers and streamlined our sprinkler system. The more favorable weather allowed our flowers and shrubs to thrive and sprout more quickly, some almost uncontrollably. It also brought us an array of colorful blossoms and fragrances.

Now of course, the desert heat has us all in its grip. The relentless sun can do quite a number on certain plants. It also slows, in some cases completely stops the growth of the plants.

Some just disintegrate and burn to a crisp.

Life in the desert can be rather challenging, particularly when it comes to gardening. But we take it in stride. And relish to the fullest every little success to make even the tiniest flower bloom.

A Visit to the Springs Preserve

It’s been a while since our more extensive entry, but here it goes…

On Sunday, the Springs Preserve in Las Vegas celebrated its first anniversary, with reduced admission fees, all-you-can-eat ice cream offerings, live music and other activities. George and I always wanted to visit this park, but never did. We're glad we took advantage of this opportunity. The weather was also perfect for such outings. There was plenty of sunshine, a gentle breeze and the scorching desert heat has not yet set in. In other words...perfect conditions.

This place is simply amazing. It’s far larger than we had anticipated and it’s the most un-Las Vegas attraction in Las Vegas, which we find very refreshing.

The Springs Preserve is actually the birthplace of Las Vegas. Its springs were once providing water to Native Americans thousands of years ago and later sustained travelers of the Old Spanish Trails. Today, this park educates visitors about its rich geographical and cultural history. There are countless exhibitions about the local flora and fauna, archeological digs and how contemporary Las Vegas has influenced the valley. Also included are educational and recreational attractions to inform about the human impact on the environment and how to protect it for the future.

In addition, there are demonstration gardens, a small zoo showing local animals and reptiles in their natural habitat, a self-guided trail through the preserve itself, lectures, arts and crafts classes, and of course...this still being Las Vegas...a Wolfgang Puck café.

Still under construction is the future home of the Nevada State Museum, which eventually will be part of this very impressive complex. We will definitely visit this extraordinary place more often.

There is way too much to see and do to list here. Here are some photos of our visit to the Springs Preserve. The following snippets only capture a small insight into an attraction on a much grander scale.
